Ch ch ch changes to GoToMeeting recordings.

My very first post to this blog was about GoToMeeting recordings and how to convert them. In fact that subject alone has probably been the biggest source of interest in my blog and driven the most page views and comments. I’m happy to announce that converting and sharing recordings made with GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar or GoToTraining has become a lot easier, and my previous workarounds are no longer needed.

Here is why:

Recordings made on a PC still use the GoToMeeting codec, but the resulting files have a new .g2m extension, so you can easily tell that they have not yet been converted. The new Recording Manager makes managing your recordings so much easier. You can now convert you recording whenever you want and choose the format of the resulting file. On Windows you can select .wmv or .mp4 file formats, on Mac it’s .MOV or .mp4. The codec on the Windows recordings is removed during the conversion process so you can share and upload your recording right away.

On the subject of sharing, if you have a GoToWebinar or GoToTraining account, you now have the ability to upload your recordings to your account and share them directly from there. Each account has 3GB of space for recordings.

The final improvement worth mentioning is that after the conversion process is completed, your original recording is now moved to a new folder, rather than over written. On a Windows PC your recording is moved to a new folder called Original, which is located in your Documents folder. If you are using a Mac, the files are saved in a folder called tempAV which is located in the Recordings folder. Due to the size of these files they are not saved indefinitely, so you might want to make copies to a dedicated storage solution if you want to keep them as back ups.

This means if for any reason you need to run the conversion again you can. Just copy the original recording files back into your Documents or Recordings folders and and launch the Recording Manager again.

UPDATE: This is no longer required, please see my most recent post about recording, Ch ch ch changes to GoToMeeting Recording

As with all updates, the latest release of GoToMeeting version 6.0 included some changes designed to improve the GoToMeeting experience. Because of these changes, a new Converter Batch File was required and my very talented co-worker Dane has once again delivered!

1. Download the Converter BATCH file (Converter_v2.bat) and move it to the Desktop

2. Drag-n-drop the WMV file on to the Converter BATCH file

3. Enter the appropriate build of GoToMeeting and hit enter

4. Once finished, the converter will replace the original file with the converted file.

Also, the GoToMeeting Transcoding Wizard has been updated to work with the latest version of GoToMeeting.  You can download it directly from the GoToMeeting Support Site.
